Reduce the Risk of Dementia with a Mediterranean Diet
It’s a well-known fact that in order to increase your chances of longevity, you should adopt a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating certain foods, taking regular exercise, not smoking, and maintaining normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Today, there are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, making it the biggest cause of death in England and Wales. There is plenty of existing research which shows that adopting a Mediterranean-style diet can significantly reduce your chances of developing dementia.
Traditionally, Mediterranean diets are high in fruits, vegetables, legumes and cereals. It allows for moderate consumption of oily fish and dairy, and tends to be low in meat, sugar and saturated fat. The majority of fat that is in this diet comes from olive oil, and alcohol is consumed in moderation with meals.
A high intake of fruit and vegetables can result in high levels of antioxidants. This is thought to help protect against some of the damage to brain cells that is associated with Alzheimer's disease. Also, this can increase the levels of proteins in the brain that protect the brain cells from damage. Moreover, the Mediterranean diet has been linked to reducing a person’s cholesterol level which again, has been associated with memory and thinking problems.
Although there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, it is always worth looking at the preventative methods and a healthy diet is a great place to start.
