Nurse Numbers Continue to Fall
New analysis conducted by The King’s Fund has revealed a ‘worrying decline’ in nurse numbers. The RCN have declared that it’s imperative that health and care providers give assurance to the public that services are safe this winter.
The analysis has shown that there has been a significant decline in EU nurses joining the UK register since Brexit. The uncertainty surrounding Brexit has also seen an increasing number of EU staff leaving the NHS. This, along with changes to language testing requirements, has all played a part in the recent decline.
RCN Chief Executive, Janet Davies, said: “When the NHS has never been busier, it is haemorrhaging experienced nurses at a faster rate than it can find new recruits”. Janet believes that the decline is due to years of poor decisions and excessive cost-cutting, going on to say: “We need a new law that makes ministers and others accountable for proper workforce planning and safe and effective staffing levels”.
