GPs Require Guidance To Make Effective Neuro-Physiotherapy Referrals, Says Charity
GPs need further training and guidance to effectively assess patients with neurological conditions and refer them to specialist neuro-physiotherapy services, according to a charity report.
The Neurological Alliance's Neurology and Primary Care report - which surveyed 1,001 GPs across the UK - shows that there are challenges in identifying those with neurological conditions quickly and referring them to the correct care pathway.
The report pointed out that a large proportion of patients with neurological conditions might not demonstrate obvious symptoms, necessitating further training for GPs so they can diagnose patients earlier and refer them to a physiotherapist.
It goes on to set out eight key recommendations for improving primary care pathways for people living with neurological conditions, including developing a pan-neurological 'watch list' of 10 signs and symptoms GPs should be aware of.
