‘21 Day Challenge’ for Physiotherapists
Physios are signing up to perform the exercises they normally prescribe their patients
Goom’s idea was inspired by a personal experience, where after suffering an injury, he struggled to complete a rehabilitation programme. He was also aware of research that suggests that as many as 70% of patients did not exercise as advised.
‘It’s really easy for us physios to give out exercises and expect the patients to do them, and sometimes we don’t actually empathise with how hard it is to do them,’ explained Goom. ‘So the idea is to get physios – and other health professionals – picking a typical programme they might give to a patient and commit to doing it themselves for 21 days, to see what it’s actually like.’
Goom is doing the challenge himself and is finding it hard to fit the exercises into his day, resulting in him having more empathy with his patients. He said that if time is an issue, physios could ask the patient to complete their exercises fewer times a week or allow them to cut out the need for recovery between repetitions.
